Welcome to the latest JSaRC Update.
New Home Secretary and Minister of State for Security Appointments
Please join us in welcoming The Rt. Hon. Priti Patel MP as our new Home Secretary. We also welcome The Rt. Hon. Brandon Lewis MP, who has been appointed as the new Minister of State for Security and Economic Crime. JSaRC is engaged on a number of programmes which have been given significant support from both previous post holders. Over the coming weeks and months, we hope to continue to build on this support and engage the new Home Secretary and Security Minister where relevant.
JSaRC Open Day: 24 July 2019
This week, the JSaRC team held our latest Open Day at our Cambridge HQ. Eight organisations took part and were given a briefing and welcome presentation by the Head of JSaRC, Angela Essel. This was followed by 1-2-1 consultations to discuss solutions, how they relate to government challenges and possible next steps.
As always with JSaRC Open Days, attendees value the opportunity to meet the team as a group and in a face to face environment. Feedback from one attendee stated:
“The passion and enthusiasm that came across from your (Angela Essel) presentation was a bonus… …I actually came away with renewed hope. it was very worthwhile for us. Thank you all.”
Modern Slavery and the Supply Chain – a short report on JSaRC’s recent visit to Asia
Modern slavery is a serious crime that causes significant harm to some of the most vulnerable people in society. JSaRC’s Dr. Samantha Lawrence, alongside a member of the Home Office’s Modern Slavery policy team recently visited Thailand and Malaysia to obtain a better understanding of the issues and impact of Modern Slavery within the supply chain. Whilst in the region, Dr Lawrence attended the Institute for Human Rights in Business’ Global Forum for Responsible Recruitment, and the Responsible Business Alliance’s event on Driving Responsible Business in Asia.

JSaRC Team Update
Following on from recent staff changes in the JSaRC team, notably the appointment of Angela Essel as Head of JSaRC, the team is pleased to announce the following moves:
Jon Gray has been appointed as Head of the Joint Response Team within JSaRC. Jon and his team have responsibility for the operational management and delivery of JSaRC’s dynamic workplan.
Rhodri Atwell has been seconded to JSaRC since August 2018. Following significant contribution on programmes such as Counter-UAS and the Information Sharing Platform in partnership with NCTPHQ, next week sees Rhodri departing the team and heading back to Chapel Associates. We’d like to thank Rhodri for his hard work and drive and thank Chapel Associates for their support We wish Rhodri all the very best for the future.
Asset Recovery Action Plan
The asset recovery action plan, which is being published in parallel with the economic crime plan, builds on the government’s response to the National Audit Office (NAO) and Public Accounts Committee (PAC) reports and sets out how we will go further in improving our response to criminal finances.
The plan covers the legal, operational and public-private partnership actions that we will pursue to deliver a step change in the UK’s ability to tackle economic crime and undermine the ability of serious and organised criminals to operate. Further details can be found here:

Consultation Outcome – Serious violence: new legal duty to support multi-agency action
HMG sought views on options to support a multi-agency approach to preventing and tackling serious violence. This consultation closed on 28 May. The Home Office’s response to the consultation has been published and sets out the background, the government response and next steps as well as a summary of the responses. And finally
The summer holidays are now upon us. Whilst many of the JSaRC team will be taking some well-earned time out over the coming weeks, we’ll also be busy planning and co-ordinating many events, communications and initiatives to support our varied workplan. Look out for our next update in late August, and in the meantime the JSaRC team hopes you have a relaxing summer.
